Aaron Riedner, a 36-year-old male, tragically lost his life on March 28, 2015, in San Antonio, Texas. The incident occurred after Riedner got into an argument with a friend of Jose Rocha, a 41-year-old homeless man, while riding a city bus. Following the altercation, Rocha followed Riedner off the bus and shot him in the upper body just outside the bus stop at Buena Vista and South Zarzamora streets.
Riedner succumbed to his injuries at the scene despite efforts by emergency medical technicians to revive him.
Rocha was arrested the following day after an anonymous tip led police to his hiding place behind a tire shop. He was charged with murder and held on a $250,000 bond. The case took several years to go to trial as Rocha was initially found incompetent to stand trial in 2017, and his competency was not restored until 2021. In early March 2024, Rocha was found guilty by a jury and sentenced to the maximum sentence allowed by law, which included 25 years for possession of a deadly weapon in a penal institution. The sentences will run concurrently, and Rocha is eligible for parole after serving 30 years.
