Matthew Jacob Rodriguez Jr., a 27-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity from San Marcos, Texas, tragically died on August 14, 2018. Rodriguez was found in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 1600 block of Aquarena Springs Drive around 2 a.m., with a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene by Hays County Justice of the Peace Maggie Moreno.
His body was later taken to the Travis County medical examiner for an autopsy.
The investigation into Rodriguez's death led to the arrest of two brothers, Jacob Portier, 27, and Jason Portier, 26, who were both charged with capital murder. The brothers were familiar with the San Marcos area but had been living in Round Rock at the time of the incident. Authorities declined to release additional information about the case, but the Portier brothers were booked into the Hays County Jail shortly after the incident.
In the following years, the case saw significant developments. Adrian Terrell Rose, 29, was also arrested in connection with Rodriguez's death and was later convicted and sentenced to 27 years in prison. Jacob and Jason Portier pled guilty to the felony charge of capital murder and were each sentenced to 15 years in prison. The sentences were handed down on April 18, 2023.
