Nicholas Devone White, a 21-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on April 5, 2019, in San Marcos, Texas. The incident occurred at the Uptown Square Apartments, where White resided. On that fateful evening, San Marcos police responded to multiple calls reporting gunshots in the apartment complex's parking lot. Upon arrival, officers found White suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite their efforts to administer first aid and apply tourniquets, White succumbed to his injuries at Seton Hays Medical Center.
The investigation revealed that White had arranged to meet a witness to purchase drugs when they were confronted by a man identified as An-Drew Stephen Jones, a 23-year-old male from San Marcos. According to the witness, Jones approached White, demanding money owed for drugs. When White questioned if Jones was going to shoot him, Jones fired at least eight times, fatally wounding White. Jones then fled the scene in a silver SUV, which was later identified as a Nissan Rogue rented by Jones.
San Marcos police detectives recovered spent shell casings, bullets, and a cigarette butt left behind by the shooter. Surveillance video from the apartment complex's gated entrance showed Jones' vehicle entering the parking lot by following a resident through the automated gate. Further investigations uncovered evidence linking Jones to the crime, including a gun of the same caliber used in the shooting, electronic records tracking Jones' phone to the scene, and clothing with Jones' DNA.
On April 6, 2019, the San Marcos Hays County SWAT team executed a search and arrest warrant at Jones' residence using explosive breaches. Although Jones was not present at the time, he later surrendered to authorities on April 9, 2019. Jones was charged with murder and subsequently convicted. During the trial, Jones admitted to shooting White over a drug-related debt. On July 14, 2022, Jones was sentenced to 65 years in prison for the murder of Nicholas Devone White.
