According to police reports, Winters, along with two other individuals, Enalisa Blackman and Michael Ifeanacho, planned to purchase marijuana from two other people at the apartment complex. The plan involved Blackman meeting the drug dealers while Winters and Ifeanacho hid in a utility closet to ambush the dealers and take the marijuana without paying. However, the situation escalated when the drug dealers showed up with an additional person, leading to a confrontation. During the altercation, the drug dealer pulled out a gun and started shooting, striking Winters.
Enalisa Blackman and Michael Ifeanacho, both 20 years old, were arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with Winters' death. They were held in the Hays County Jail while awaiting trial. Additionally, 19-year-old Christopher Lee Williams was later arrested and charged with the murder of Khambrail Winters. Williams was identified as the shooter and was transported to the Travis County Jail to await extradition to Hays County.
The San Marcos Police Department continued to investigate the case, seeking additional suspects and surveillance footage that could provide more details about the incident. The Alief Taylor Football program and Texas State University community mourned the loss of Winters, remembering him for his athletic abilities and kind-hearted personality.
