On March 5, 2020, Specialist Christopher Wayne Sawyer, a 29-year-old soldier from Longview, Washington, was found unresponsive in his on-post residence at Fort Hood, Texas. Sawyer had joined the Army in October 2017 as a wheeled vehicle mechanic and had been assigned to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, since May 2018. His awards and decorations included the Army Achievement Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Army
Service Ribbon.
The Army Criminal Investigation Command launched an investigation into Sawyer's death. While foul play was not initially suspected, investigators did not completely rule it out and continued a thorough death investigation. Fort Hood officials stated that no further information would be released at the time to protect the integrity of the investigative process.
As of now, there have been no arrests, suspects, or litigations related to Sawyer's death. The investigation remains ongoing, and the Army CID continues to work diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding his passing.
