Portia Williams-Edwards, a 46-year-old woman from Grand Prairie, Texas, tragically lost her life on May 3, 2020. She was a native of Corsicana, Texas, and was known affectionately by friends and family as “P Dub.” The circumstances surrounding her death were particularly harrowing and involved a violent confrontation with her husband, Rickey Wayne Edwards.
On the day of the incident, Portia and her husband were in the process of moving into their new home on Monet Lane in Grand
Prairie. During the move, Portia called her father and informed him that Edwards was “acting crazy,” adding that he had hit her, pulled out a gun, and threatened her life. She also called her son, Kameion Kitchen, and relayed the same information. Concerned for her safety, Kameion drove to the couple’s home to confront Edwards.
The confrontation escalated quickly, with Edwards using a Glock pistol to shoot Kameion 10 times and Portia twice in the head. About an hour after the shootings, Edwards called 911 and claimed that his wife and stepson had been shot inside the home. When police arrived at the scene, they found both victims dead and immediately arrested Edwards.
Edwards faced charges of capital murder for the deaths of Portia Williams-Edwards and her son. During his trial, he argued that he acted in self-defense, but the jury found him guilty after deliberating for only 14 minutes. The evidence presented at trial showed beyond a reasonable doubt that Edwards executed both Portia and Kameion. As a result, Edwards received an automatic sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The case highlighted issues of family violence, rage, and control. The Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office and the Grand Prairie Police Department worked diligently to bring justice for Portia and Kameion.
