Born on July 16, 1990, in Corsicana, Texas, Hassell was known for his roles in "The Kids Are All Right" and the television series "Surface." According to reports, Hassell went outside to retrieve something from his girlfriend's car, a Nissan Sentra, when he was confronted by an assailant.
He was shot in the stomach during what authorities described as a random robbery. The assailant fled the scene in the stolen vehicle, which was later recovered by police.
Following an investigation, 18-year-old D'Jon Antone was arrested on November 4, 2020, in connection with Hassell's death. Antone was charged with capital murder and held at the Grand Prairie Detention Center on a $500,000 bond. Authorities indicated that the crime was a random robbery, and there was no known prior connection between Hassell and Antone. In February 2021, a Tarrant County Grand Jury indicted Antone on the capital murder charge. Subsequently, on March 27, 2024, Antone was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 40 years in prison.
