Dr. Katherine Lindley Dodson, a 43-year-old white female pediatrician, tragically lost her life on January 26, 2021, in Austin, Texas. Dr. Dodson was a well-respected physician who dedicated her life to helping children and was deeply loved by her family, friends, and patients. She was a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and had an impressive educational background, including a magna cum laude degree in chemistry from Washington and Lee University and a medical degree from Louisiana State
University School of Medicine in New Orleans. She completed her residency in pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and later served as an instructor at Harvard Medical School and as an urgent care physician at Boston Children's Hospital. Dr. Dodson moved to Austin in 2007, where she worked as a pediatric hospitalist at Dell Children's Medical Center and later became the owner of Children's Medical Group in 2020.
On the day of her death, Dr. Dodson was at her medical office when a man entered the building with a gun and took several hostages. The man was later identified as Dr. Bharat Narumanchi, a 43-year-old pediatrician who had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Dr. Narumanchi had visited the office a week earlier to apply for a volunteer position. During the hostage situation, Dr. Narumanchi allowed some hostages to leave, but he kept Dr. Dodson inside. After hours of negotiation attempts by the police, Dr. Narumanchi fatally shot Dr. Dodson before taking his own life. The police believe that Dr. Narumanchi's terminal cancer diagnosis played a significant role in his actions.
The tragic incident has left the Austin medical community and Dr. Dodson's family and friends devastated. Dr. Dodson is survived by her husband, Drew, and their three children, Shaw, Tucker, and Loretta. Her family described her as a dedicated mom, wife, daughter, friend, and pediatrician who radiated light, love, and joy in everything she did. The loss of Dr. Dodson has been deeply felt by all who knew her, and her legacy as a compassionate and skilled physician will endure.
