Maria Celia Ferrer-Mena, a 38-year-old Hispanic woman, tragically lost her life on June 13, 2016, in Austin, Texas. Born on October 26, 1977, in Leon, Guanajuato, Maria moved to Austin, where she worked at De-De’s Discounts and was known for her generosity and love for animals. She is survived by her children, Jose Francisco Gonzales-Ferrer, Adolfo Naczari Ferrer-Gonzales, and Angel Blanco Ferrer, as well as her grandchildren, Easani Aylan Ferrer-Lopez and Prince Ferrer.
Maria was
fatally shot in the hallway outside her apartment at the Mueller Place Apartments on Wellington Drive. Her husband and their 12-year-old son were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting. Maria was found lying on her back with trauma to her head, and the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office ruled her death a homicide. The suspect, described as a Hispanic male with lighter skin, standing between 5'8" and 6'0" tall, with a skinny build, was last seen wearing a grey hoodie sweatshirt and black basketball shorts.
Despite an extensive investigation, the suspect remains at large. Austin Police Department has been actively seeking information from the public to help identify and apprehend the shooter. The community has been deeply affected by Maria's death, with friends and family holding vigils and fundraisers to support her loved ones and cover funeral costs.
