Keimauri Rogers, a 17-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on February 3, 2022, in Willis, Texas. The incident occurred outside the home of Sherman Dewayne Griffin III, a 25-year-old resident of Willis. According to reports, Griffin shot Rogers four times, resulting in his death at the scene. Griffin claimed that he acted in self-defense, stating that he believed Rogers was armed and intended to shoot him.
However, it was later revealed that Rogers was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
The relationship between Rogers and Griffin was marked by ongoing tension and conflict. Griffin alleged that Rogers had attempted to rob him in August 2021, which led to a series of confrontations between the two. Despite Griffin's claims of self-defense, the Montgomery County District Attorney's office pursued charges against him. During the trial, testimony from the Willis Police Department and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office highlighted Griffin's previous criminal history, including multiple interactions related to drugs and gun violence.
On January 26, 2023, a Montgomery County jury convicted Griffin of murder. The jury deliberated for less than an hour before determining that Griffin's actions were not justified as self-defense. Griffin was subsequently sentenced to 75 years in prison by 435th state District Judge Patty Maginnis. The trial and conviction brought some measure of justice for the family and friends of Keimauri Rogers, who continue to mourn the loss of the young African American male.
