On August 1, 1980, Dr. Juan Dumois, a 46-year-old physician from Tampa, Florida, was tragically killed in a quadruple murder at the Kingfish Boat Ramp in Holmes Beach, Florida. Dr. Dumois, along with his two sons, Eric (13) and Mark (9), and a local resident, Robert Matzke (60), were fatally shot in a shocking and brutal attack that remains unsolved to this day.
The incident occurred as Dr. Dumois and his family were returning from a fishing trip. They had just loaded their boat onto a trailer hitched to their station wagon when they were approached by a man on a bicycle. The man, who initially asked for directions and then requested a ride, was allowed into the vehicle. Once inside, he produced a firearm and began shooting. Dr. Dumois and his sons were killed instantly, while his brother-in-law, Raymond Barrows, who was also in the vehicle, was critically injured but survived the initial attack. Barrows later succumbed to a heart attack two years after the incident.
The assailant fled the scene and continued his rampage at a nearby grocery store, where he fatally shot Robert Matzke, an Air Force veteran who had unknowingly confronted the killer. Despite extensive investigations and numerous tips, the identity of the murderer remains unknown, and the case has become one of the most notorious unsolved crimes in the area.
Over the years, the Holmes Beach Police Department has continued to investigate the case, maintaining evidence and following up on leads. However, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the killings remains a mystery.
