On March 24, 2023, 19-year-old Sean Paul Velasquez was fatally shot at a residence on Williamson Lane in Willis, Texas. Deputies from the San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call around 12:30 p.m. and found Velasquez lying on a bed with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that Velasquez had recently begun dating the ex-girlfriend of 19-year-old Joshua Escobar.
Authorities believe that Escobar, in a jealous rage, confronted Velasquez at the residence and shot him before fleeing in a gray 2017 Toyota Yaris.
Escobar surrendered to the San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office the following evening. Initially held on a $1 million bond, his bond was later reduced to $75,000 by 258th District Court Judge Travis Kitchens, despite objections from prosecutors and Velasquez's family. Escobar was released on bond with conditions, including wearing an ankle monitor and house arrest.
In early June 2023, Escobar removed his ankle monitor and fled the area. He was apprehended four days later in Guadalupe County, Texas, along with Jennifer Avila, his alleged girlfriend and a key witness in the case. Following this incident, Escobar's bond was revoked, and he was returned to custody.
Velasquez's family has been vocal in seeking justice, organizing protests and prayer marches at the San Jacinto County Courthouse to express their dissatisfaction with the judicial process, particularly regarding the bond reductions granted to Escobar.
