Manuel Sanchez Jr., a 28-year-old Hispanic male with Down syndrome, was tragically murdered on September 4, 2022, in El Paso, Texas. On that fateful evening, Manuel left his home around 9 p.m. to play basketball at Sgt. Jesus Roberto Vasquez USMC Park, a place he frequently visited. When he did not return home, his father grew worried and called 911. Days later, a burned vehicle with human remains was found in a desert area near Loop 375 and North of Montana on Fort Bliss property.
Investigators determined that the victim had been shot in the head with a handgun, resulting in his death. Some of his property, including his wallet, identification card, $300 cash, and a silver ring, was also stolen.
The investigation led to the arrest of 18-year-old Michael Leyva, who admitted to shooting Manuel Sanchez Jr. in the head while he was in the driver's seat of his father's SUV. Leyva confessed that he wanted to rob Manuel to pay off a debt he owed. After ensuring Manuel was dead, Leyva, along with two other individuals, drove the vehicle to the desert area and set it on fire with Manuel's body inside. Leyva is facing charges of capital murder and aggravated robbery. The other two suspects involved in the crime have not been publicly identified.
Manuel Sanchez Jr.'s family described him as a happy and joyful person who lived a very normal life despite his condition. His father, who worked as a truck driver, quit his job following the tragic incident, and the family decided to move back to Chicago to be with their relatives during this difficult time. The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help cover funeral expenses and other costs associated with Manuel's death. The investigation into the murder is ongoing, and authorities are working to gather more information about the other suspects involved in the crime.
