Steven Lopez, an 18-year-old Hispanic male from El Paso, Texas, tragically lost his life on November 11, 2021, in a shooting incident at J.P. Shawver Park in the Lower Valley area of El Paso. On that fateful evening, Steven, along with a 16-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, were sitting in a parked car when they were approached by suspects who opened fire on them.
The shooting resulted in the deaths of Steven and the 16-year-old boy, while the 14-year-old girl sustained injuries but survived the attack.
The investigation into the double homicide revealed that the suspects had approached the parked car and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. Initially described as a possible drive-by shooting, further investigation clarified that the suspects had approached the victims on foot. The motive behind the shooting remains undisclosed by the authorities.
In the aftermath of the incident, the El Paso Police Department and the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force made significant progress in identifying and apprehending the suspects involved in the murders. Two individuals, 17-year-old Miguel Angel Marin and 32-year-old Martin Rodriguez, both residents of El Paso's Mission Valley, were arrested and charged with capital murder. Marin was detained on November 11, 2021, while Rodriguez was apprehended on November 24, 2021. Both suspects were booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility without bond.
The case continued to develop as another suspect, 18-year-old Ricardo Styles De La Rosa, was also arrested in connection with the Shawver Park murders. De La Rosa, who was already in jail on a separate charge, faced charges of capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
