Jose Guadalupe Reazola, a 19-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on April 4, 2018, in El Paso, Texas. His body was discovered in the Montana Vista desert by a group riding all-terrain vehicles. The autopsy report revealed that Reazola died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide. The investigation into his death uncovered that Reazola was killed for not adhering to the rules of a street gang.
Arath Jauregui, who was 18 years old at the time of the
murder, was identified as the primary suspect. Jauregui, also known by the nickname "Smurf," claimed to be a member of the Bloods street gang. Witnesses informed investigators that Jauregui had given Reazola "three strikes" for not following his instructions regarding proper gang attire, snitching, and not being picked up. These violations led Jauregui to shoot Reazola in the desert area.
Shortly after the homicide, Jauregui fled to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, and was listed among El Paso's most-wanted fugitives for three years. In October 2021, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers captured Jauregui at the Bridge of the Americas port of entry. He was subsequently held at the El Paso County Jail Annex awaiting transfer to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
In March 2023, Jauregui, now 23 years old, pleaded guilty to the murder charge in the 243rd District Court. He received a 25-year prison sentence for his role in the killing of Jose Guadalupe Reazola. The case highlighted the presence of the Bloods street gang in El Paso, which includes both Black and Latino members. The gang's influence in the area dates back to the 1980s, and this tragic incident underscored the violent consequences of gang-related activities.
