Posseman John Carver, a 25-year-old male of unknown ethnicity, was shot and killed on January 10, 1905, in Cocke County, Tennessee. He was part of a federal posse from the United States Department of the Treasury's Office of Internal Revenue. The posse had located a 70-gallon still just over the state line in Haywood County, North Carolina, and arrested one of the still operators at the scene.
