In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Knoxville, Tennessee, the life of Claude 'Sampson' E. Johnson Jr., a 55-year-old man, was tragically cut short. On May 18, 2024, Johnson, a co-owner of Anderson Automotive and Towing, responded to an alarm at his business on Cooper Street. It was a routine he had likely done countless times, but this time was different.
He arrived to find a man breaking into the establishment.
The intruder, later identified as Robert Scruggs, fatally shot Johnson during the encounter. Following the shooting, Scruggs reportedly took Johnson's gun and proceeded to a nearby location on North Broadway, where he shot and killed another man. The second victim was later identified as Dennard Darren Davis. This sudden burst of violence left the community in shock and two families mourning an immeasurable loss.
