In the quiet seclusion of a lovers' lane near Memphis, Tennessee, a young woman's life was tragically cut short on the night of January 27, 1923. Ruth McElwaine Tucker, a 20-year-old female, was in the company of 19-year-old Duncan Waller when they were approached by a man named Charles Barr. In a sudden act of violence, Barr, armed with a. 25 caliber pistol, shot and killed Waller.
Faced with this horrific event, Ruth attempted to flee for her life, but her escape was thwarted by Barr.
He subjected her to a brutal assault before shooting her as well. After committing these heinous acts, Barr stole the couple's valuables and vanished into the night. The grim discovery of their bodies was made the following morning by a milkman on his daily route.
For months, the case remained unsolved, casting a shadow of fear over the community. The perpetrator, who would come to be known as 'The Petting Party Bandit' and 'The Black Panther,' eluded authorities. It wasn't until he attacked another couple four months later that a break in the case finally came. Although he murdered 27-year-old W. Obe Spencer, his date, Laura Wheaton Johnson, managed to escape and provide a description of their attacker.
This crucial information led to the arrest of Charles Barr in July 1924. He was subsequently tried and convicted of first-degree murder for his violent crime spree. Barr was sentenced to death and was executed by electrocution at the Tennessee State Prison in 1926, bringing an end to his reign of terror.
