Six-year-old Ashlynn Luckett, an African American female, was inside a Hickory Hill residence in Memphis, Tennessee, on the evening of January 20, 2020, when she was fatally struck by gunfire. Ashlynn, a first-grade student at Sycamore Elementary School, was reportedly playing on her tablet when bullets pierced through the home from a drive-by shooting. Her 16-year-old uncle, LeQuan Boyd, was also inside the house and was killed in the same incident.
Both victims were transported to local hospitals where they succumbed to their injuries.
The deaths of Ashlynn and LeQuan sent shockwaves through the Memphis community, prompting public pleas for an end to gun violence. Law enforcement officials have characterized the shooting as a random act of violence. In the wake of the tragedy, family, friends, and community members gathered for vigils and moments of silence to honor the young lives lost. Collierville High School, where LeQuan was a student, held a special tribute during a basketball game to remember both him and his young niece.
Despite ongoing investigations by the Memphis Police Department and the involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with the murders of Ashlynn Luckett and LeQuan Boyd. The FBI has offered a substantial reward for any information that leads to the identification and arrest of the individual or individuals responsible for their deaths.
