Jordyn Washington, an 8-year-old girl, was fatally shot in Memphis, Tennessee, on November 22, 2020. The incident occurred at an apartment complex in the 5200 block of Shelbourne Circle in Raleigh at approximately 3:50 p.m. Jordyn was inside an apartment, where her grandmother was preparing dinner, when a bullet fired from outside struck her in the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into her death quickly identified a suspect.
Authorities determined that Cedric Conley, 43, had been involved in a dispute with several people, including a former girlfriend, in the apartment complex's parking lot. Witnesses reported that Conley retrieved an assault-style rifle from his apartment and began firing at the group. It was one of these rounds that tragically entered the nearby apartment and killed Jordyn.
Following the shooting, a warrant was issued for Conley's arrest on November 26, 2020. He was placed on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's Most Wanted list. On December 8, 2020, Conley was apprehended in New Orleans and subsequently extradited back to Memphis to face charges.
In March 2021, a Shelby County grand jury indicted Cedric Conley on charges of first-degree murder in the perpetration of a felony, four counts of attempted first-degree murder, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and employment of a firearm during a dangerous felony. He was booked into the Shelby County Jail. The case was assigned to the District Attorney's Domestic Violence Unit, which handles cases involving intimate partner violence.
