John Wesley Sykes Jr., a 22-year-old male of African American ethnicity, was a Patrolman with the Memphis Police Department. On December 31, 1982, he was shot and killed while pursuing a vehicle in John F. Kennedy Park. The incident began when Patrolman Sykes and his field training officer observed a vehicle driving erratically. Unbeknownst to them, the occupants of the vehicle had just committed an armed robbery at a U.S. Post Office parking lot.
