On the evening of March 23, 2023, 58-year-old Cleo Peeples, a male resident of Memphis, Tennessee, was fatally shot just steps from his home. The incident occurred shortly before 10:00 p.m. at the corner of Shelby Drive and Chevron in the Whitehaven neighborhood. When Memphis police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Peeples lying unconscious on the sidewalk, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
According to his family, Peeples had mentioned he was stepping out to sell a
phone and would be right back. Tragically, he never returned. His family believes this intended transaction may have been what led to his untimely death, suggesting the motive could have been robbery. Peeples was shot a total of eight times. A late-night phone call delivered the devastating news to his son that his father had been shot and had not survived.
The aftermath of the shooting left a visible trail of blood from the middle of Shelby Drive to the sidewalk where Peeples ultimately collapsed. Homicide detectives investigating the case have indicated that a suspect was seen fleeing the area in a dark-colored vehicle, heading down Shelby Drive. As of now, the investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the murder of Cleo Peeples. His family is left grappling with unanswered questions and the profound loss of a loved one who would not live to see his grandson graduate from high school or attend prom.
