Tom Sweeten, a 55-year-old male of unspecified ethnicity, was fatally shot by his wife, Dorothea "Dottie" Sweeten, on January 24, 1990, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Dottie Sweeten, a retired policewoman, claimed that she shot Tom in self-defense after enduring years of mental and physical abuse. She also killed their 39-year-old son, Charles Forester Jr., also known as Chucky Sweeten, who had an intellectual disability, because she feared he would be left alone with no one to care for him.
