On the evening of September 15, 2009, Christopher Lynn McBath, a 26-year-old African American male, was sitting on a porch on Better Tomorrow Drive in the Western Heights neighborhood of Knoxville, Tennessee. What should have been a peaceful evening turned tragic when he was fatally shot. This act of violence cut short the life of a man remembered by his family as a kind and loving individual who brought joy to those around him and was a father to four children.
The investigation into
McBath's death led authorities to three individuals: Monica Wright Jones, her cousin Shawn Louis Payne, and Trent Lamark Barton Jr. Investigators believe that Jones orchestrated the attack under the mistaken belief that McBath had provided information to law enforcement that led to a drug arrest. Driven by this false assumption, a plan was set in motion that would have devastating consequences.
Following the investigation, arrests were made and charges were brought against the three suspects. Shawn Louis Payne and Trent Lamark Barton Jr. were charged with second-degree murder. Monica Wright Jones, considered the mastermind behind the shooting, faced a charge of facilitation of first-degree murder. In October 2009, Shawn Payne, who was 19 at the time, was arrested during a traffic stop after a description of a vehicle he might be in was provided to the police.
In April 2012, Monica Wright Jones accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to 15 years in prison for her role in Christopher McBath's death. Shawn Louis Payne and Trent Lamark Barton Jr. also pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received lengthy sentences. The resolution of the case, particularly the plea deal for Jones, left McBath's family feeling that the punishment was not sufficient for the loss of their loved one. His mother expressed her profound grief and frustration, stating that Jones had destroyed their family and taken a precious life. The tragic event marked the second time she had lost a son to violence.
