In the spring of 2014, a dispute over the volume of music tragically escalated, leading to the death of 29-year-old Bruce Whitmore, Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee. On the evening of April 15th, Whitmore was in the 2100 block of Clayton when he was shot twice. The incident reportedly stemmed from an argument that broke out after Whitmore asked a group of individuals to turn down their music. He left behind a large family, including six children who were left without a father.
His mother, Sharon Garner, later spoke about the senselessness of the violence, emphasizing that guns are not the answer to disagreements.
The investigation into Whitmore's death led authorities to identify a suspect, Vintonii Chase, who was 21 years old at the time. A warrant for Chase's arrest was issued on April 17, 2014, and he was apprehended on April 23rd by the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force in conjunction with the Memphis Police Department. Chase, also known as 'Bam,' was taken into custody without incident at an apartment in the 8400 block of Ridgeway. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
Vintonii Chase's case went to trial, where the proceedings highlighted complexities within the criminal justice system. The defense attorney for Chase argued that the witness who identified him was not credible. Furthermore, the defense pointed out inconsistencies between the witness's account of the events and the medical examiner's description of Whitmore's injuries. On November 14, 2015, a jury acquitted Chase of the first-degree murder charge. Despite the acquittal, Chase entered a plea without admitting guilt to the charge of being a felon in possession of a handgun and received a four-year prison sentence.
