In the late summer of 2021, the life of Martavious Desheon Calhoun, a 22-year-old African American man from Memphis, Tennessee, was brought to a tragic and abrupt end. On Wednesday, September 22, 2021, events unfolded that stemmed from a complicated and ultimately fatal love triangle. Calhoun arrived at his own home in the 3000 block of Bestway Drive in the Airport Area of Memphis earlier than anticipated, a decision that would set in motion a devastating chain of events.
Upon entering
his bedroom, Calhoun made a startling discovery. Hidden inside his closet was another man, Demarcus Linsey, who was involved with Calhoun's girlfriend, Maxcine Jones. The unexpected confrontation quickly escalated into a physical altercation between the two men. During the struggle, a Springfield Armory 9mm handgun that belonged to Calhoun fell from his waistband. Linsey seized the weapon and momentarily turned it on Jones, demanding that she gather his belongings so he could leave.
The brief pause in the conflict was short-lived. As Jones complied with Linsey's demand, the fight between Calhoun and Linsey reignited. In the ensuing struggle, Linsey fired the handgun multiple times, striking Calhoun with his own weapon. The gunshots proved fatal, and Calhoun's life was tragically cut short in his own home. Following the shooting, Linsey fled the scene, leaving behind a scene of violence and heartbreak.
Law enforcement was quick to respond, and their investigation led them to Demarcus Linsey. He was apprehended by police at the intersection of Tchulahoma Road and Shelby Drive. During their investigation, officers recovered the handgun used in the shooting in a nearby backyard; it was found to have eleven spent rounds and one live round remaining. Linsey, who had a prior criminal record, was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. A bond was set at $75,000 as he awaited his court appearance.
