In the early hours of a Wednesday morning in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 27-year-old Anthony W. Travis was tragically cut short. On December 11, 2019, an altercation that began inside James Lounge on Summer Avenue spilled out into the parking lot, erupting in gunfire just before 12:30 a.m. When the violence subsided, Mr. Travis, a Black male, was found deceased at the scene, a victim of the fatal shooting.
Another man, Malik Muhammad, was also struck by the gunfire and rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
The investigation into the shooting led Memphis police to identify two suspects. Cededrick Ivory was apprehended and faced the most serious charge of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Anthony Travis. He was also charged with the attempted first-degree murder of Malik Muhammad and unlawful employment of a firearm. A second man, Frank Walls, was also arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and unlawful possession of a weapon for his role in the incident. The events of that night highlighted a history of violent incidents at the nightclub, prompting scrutiny from local authorities.
In April 2022, the legal process reached a significant milestone. Following a trial, a Shelby County jury found Cededrick Ivory guilty of the first-degree premeditated murder of Anthony W. Travis. For this conviction, he was sentenced to life in prison. Prior to the trial, the prosecution dismissed the charges against Ivory for the attempted murder of Malik Muhammad and the firearm possession charge. The conviction brought a measure of justice for the family and loved ones of Anthony Travis, who was remembered as a cherished individual.
