On a summer evening in Johnson City, Tennessee, the life of Michael Alexis Lee Rowe, a 30-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On July 4, 2014, Rowe was sitting in a vehicle, engaged in a conversation, when he was fatally shot. The incident was later determined to be an act of second-degree murder.
The investigation into Rowe's death led to the arrest of a Johnson City man, who was subsequently charged with second-degree murder.
The case proceeded to trial, and in August 2024, a conviction was secured. However, the legal proceedings were not without controversy. During the trial, it was alleged that the state had withheld evidence that could have potentially been beneficial to the defense. This claim led to the filing of a motion for a new trial, asserting that the undisclosed evidence might have altered the case's outcome.
Michael Rowe was the son of Kenneth “Honey” and Caroline “Calley” Jackson, and his birth father was LaFonda Young Cook. He was a father to his son, Michaeus Myon Tahmell Rowe, and had an unborn son, Michael Alexis Lee Rowe, Jr., on the way with his fiancée, Alyssa Michelle Watson, at the time of his passing. His family, which also included his brothers, sister, nieces, and nephew, remembered him lovingly and held a celebration of his life on July 9, 2014, followed by his burial in West Lawn Cemetery.
