In the winter of 2019, a violent encounter in Johnson City, Tennessee, claimed the life of 31-year-old Charles Shelton. On the evening of January 16th, law enforcement responded to a call of shots fired in the Cash Hollow Road area. Upon their arrival, they discovered Shelton in a yard, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Another individual, Hailey Donald, was also injured by gunfire during the incident but survived after receiving medical treatment.
The investigation into the
shooting quickly pointed to Brandon Lynn Miller as the primary suspect. Authorities determined that an altercation had occurred when a group of individuals, including Shelton and Donald, arrived at Miller's residence. As the group was attempting to leave, Miller allegedly opened fire from a window of his home, striking both Shelton and Donald. The motive for the initial confrontation was not immediately made public.
Following the shooting, Miller and his girlfriend, Summer Bentley, fled the scene, sparking a multi-county manhunt. At the time, Miller was already wanted on outstanding warrants for probation violations in Washington, Carter, and Unicoi counties. The search for the pair concluded when U.S. Marshals located Miller's vehicle at a relative's home in Seymour, Tennessee. After a brief surveillance, Miller attempted to flee from law enforcement, leading to a vehicle pursuit. Although officers lost sight of his car, they found it abandoned shortly thereafter.
Acting on information, law enforcement tracked Miller to a nearby residence where he had barricaded himself. A SWAT team was called to the scene, and after a standoff, negotiators successfully convinced Miller to surrender without further incident. Summer Bentley had been located and arrested earlier at the relative's home on an outstanding warrant for violation of probation. Miller was subsequently taken into custody to face charges related to the shooting death of Charles Shelton.
