In the late winter of 2016, the life of Daniel Wayne McFalls, a 27-year-old Caucasian male from Knoxville, Tennessee, was tragically cut short. Remembered by his loved ones as a free-spirited and loving son, brother, and uncle with a passion for UT Football, his journey ended abruptly on the night of February 27th.
The events that led to his untimely death unfolded at the Ridgebrook Apartments, located north of downtown Knoxville.
It was there that McFalls entered into an illegal drug transaction with another individual. An argument erupted during the course of the deal, escalating with terrifying speed. In the ensuing confrontation, McFalls was shot multiple times, sustaining wounds to his abdomen, arm, and back. First responders found him lying in the parking lot of the apartment complex. He was rushed to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The Knoxville Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts soon focused on a person of interest, Demorris Sanchez McKenzie, a known member of the Crips gang. Investigators determined that the dispute arose after McKenzie allegedly sold fake drugs to McFalls. As the investigation progressed, law enforcement publicly sought information on McKenzie's whereabouts, noting that he also had outstanding warrants for unrelated matters.
The search for McKenzie culminated in his arrest, and he was subsequently charged with the murder of Daniel McFalls. The case proceeded through the legal system, and McKenzie was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder. For his role in the shooting death of Daniel McFalls, he received a mandatory life sentence, with no possibility of parole for 51 years. The resolution of the case brought a measure of justice to a family left to grieve the loss of a young man described as a beautiful soul, gone too soon.
