On a Wednesday evening in Clarksville, Tennessee, the life of 60-year-old Richard Paul Gibeau came to a tragic and violent end. It was October 5, 2016, when police were called to a residence at 2151 Watertown Place shortly before 5:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they encountered a surreal scene. A man, later identified as 27-year-old Joshua Chambers, was found kneeling in the driveway. His statements to the officers implicated him in the shooting and led them to the backyard of the home. There, they discovered Richard Gibeau, who had been fatally shot and was pronounced dead at the scene. A loaded 9mm pistol was also recovered from the driveway.
The investigation that followed revealed that an altercation had occurred between Chambers and Gibeau inside the house. The conflict spilled outside, culminating in Chambers shooting Gibeau in the driveway. Chambers surrendered to the authorities at the scene without any resistance and was taken into custody. He was subsequently booked into the Montgomery County Jail and charged with criminal homicide. The initial charge of first-degree premeditated murder was later amended to second-degree murder as the case proceeded through the legal system.
Joshua Chambers' case went to trial, and in July 2018, a jury found him guilty of the second-degree murder of Richard Gibeau. He was sentenced to serve 18 years in prison. On the day of his sentencing, a small group of protesters gathered outside the courthouse, holding signs and an upside-down flag, expressing their belief that Chambers had been wrongly convicted of the crime. The court proceedings also saw an appeal where Chambers argued for an error in the jury instructions regarding self-defense, which resulted in the case being remanded for a new trial.
