In the spring of 2017, the life of Ammerli Josue Garcia-Munoz, a 25-year-old male, was violently cut short in Nashville, Tennessee. On the evening of May 21st, in what authorities would later describe as an apparent targeted attack, Garcia-Munoz was shot multiple times. The fatal encounter took place outside a bar, where he was ambushed while sitting in his car.
Investigators found that he had been struck by 11 bullets.
The investigation into the death of Garcia-Munoz led authorities to focus on members of the notorious street gang, La Mara Salvatrucha, more commonly known as MS-13. Two individuals, Jorge Flores, also known as 'Peluche,' and Kevin Tidwell, who went by the alias 'Miklo,' were identified as the primary suspects. The motive behind the brutal slaying was rooted in gang rivalry; Flores and Tidwell reportedly believed that Garcia-Munoz was associated with a rival gang. This act of violence was intended to assert the dominance and reputation of their own criminal enterprise. Tidwell, who at one point was listed on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's 'Top 10 Most Wanted' list, was apprehended in June 2017 following a dramatic vehicle pursuit on Interstate 65 that ended in a crash.
The case against Flores and Tidwell was part of a much larger federal investigation into the widespread criminal activities of MS-13 in the Nashville area. In July 2021, a federal grand jury returned a 60-count indictment against nine members of the gang, including Flores and Tidwell, on charges of a racketeering conspiracy that encompassed numerous violent crimes. The indictment detailed a pattern of murder, kidnapping, assault, robbery, and large-scale drug distribution carried out by the gang to protect its power, territory, and profits.
In May of 2023, a federal jury found both Jorge Flores and Kevin Tidwell guilty for their roles in a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations conspiracy. Their convictions included murder in aid of racketeering for the death of Ammerli Josue Garcia-Munoz, as well as for their involvement in other murders and violent acts. The trial brought to light the ruthless nature of the MS-13 gang, where acts of violence were a means of gaining respect and status within the organization. Following their convictions, both men faced a mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison, ensuring that they would be held accountable for the string of violent crimes they committed, including the tragic and senseless murder of Ammerli Josue Garcia-Munoz.
