In the summer of 2017, a tragic event unfolded in Chattanooga, Tennessee, ending the life of 45-year-old Kathy Hardy. On the evening of July 16th, she and her husband, Shawn Hardy, were on a pier in Renaissance Park when they were approached by three men. The encounter turned violent when the men demanded their belongings in what police later described as a botched robbery attempt.
One of the assailants, later identified as 22-year-old Tyree Tichion Corley, produced a firearm and fired
three shots, fatally wounding Kathy Hardy. In a desperate bid for survival, her husband, Shawn, jumped into the river and swam to the shore, where he was able to alert a security guard. The three men fled the scene in a waiting vehicle.
Following an investigation, authorities apprehended Corley and charged him with felony murder and especially aggravated robbery. Shawn Hardy was able to identify Corley from a photo lineup as the shooter. However, before the case could proceed to trial, Corley took his own life while incarcerated at the Hamilton County Jail, leaving many questions surrounding the incident unanswered. The investigation was aided by surveillance footage from nearby businesses that helped track the suspects' movements after the fatal shooting.
