On a summer evening in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the life of William Bryant Tatum, a 20-year-old African American man, was tragically cut short. The date was July 29, 1978, and Tatum, a junior varsity basketball player at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, was in a restaurant parking lot with his 18-year-old white girlfriend, Nancy Hilton. Described as a quiet individual who loved basketball, his life was extinguished in an act of hate-fueled violence that night.
