In the autumn of 2016, the life of a young mother and dedicated professional, LaRhonda Donise Spence, was tragically cut short. A 25-year-old African American woman, she was a familiar and friendly face to many in her community as the general manager of a local Wendy's restaurant. Her world, however, came to a violent end on the evening of October 5, 2016, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. On that fateful night, on 7th Avenue, a heated argument escalated to a point of no return.
As neighbors would later report, the sound of a loud dispute was followed by the sharp crack of gunshots, forever altering the lives of those involved.
In the immediate aftermath, LaRhonda Spence was found shot and was rushed to a local hospital, but her injuries proved to be fatal. The investigation into her death quickly focused on two individuals: 20-year-old Chaztus D. Whatley and 28-year-old Eurica Leslie. Whatley was identified as the person who fired the fatal shot as Spence was attempting to retreat from the altercation. While both were considered persons of interest in the case, it was Chaztus D. Whatley who was ultimately arrested and faced legal consequences for his actions.
The subsequent legal proceedings saw Chaztus D. Whatley charged with second-degree homicide in connection with the death of LaRhonda Spence.
