In the quiet community of East Ridge, Tennessee, just outside of Chattanooga, the life of 54-year-old Vi Ella Lawhorn came to a tragic and unexpected end on April 8, 2018. A woman known for her love of music, dancing, and cherished annual trips with her friends, she was a beloved mother and friend whose vibrant spirit was a light to those who knew her.
Neighbors recalled her as a sweetheart, often seen tending to the flowers in her yard, a picture of tranquil domesticity that belied the horrific events to come.
In the early morning hours of that Sunday, the unimaginable unfolded inside her home. Her 23-year-old son, Casey Lawhorn, a former university student, picked her up from a bar around 12:30 a.m. and brought her home. Later that morning, he would make a chilling 911 call, confessing to the murders of his mother and a friend who was staying with them, 22-year-old Avery Gaines. He told the dispatcher he planned to take his own life. By the time police arrived at the John Ross Road home, they found the bodies of Vi Lawhorn and Avery Gaines, both having been shot. Casey was gone, sparking a multi-state manhunt.
The horror of the crime was amplified when Casey took to Facebook to post a detailed and remorseless confession. In the now-deleted post, he recounted the grim details of the murders, stating that he had shot his friend while he slept on the living room floor. He then went to his mother's room and shot her multiple times. His chilling words described his mother's terror in her final moments. After fleeing the scene, Casey Lawhorn drove his gold Ford Taurus south. His car was later found abandoned on Interstate 59 in Jasper County, Mississippi. The search for him came to an end when authorities discovered his body in a wooded area in Vossburg, Mississippi. He had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
