Rodtreze Bailey, a 23-year-old Black male, tragically lost his life on November 17, 2017, in Memphis, Tennessee. The fatal incident occurred at the Stonegate Apartments, where an argument escalated into violence. During the dispute, a man named Demetris Johnson allegedly brandished a firearm and shot Bailey. Rodtreze Bailey succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the shooting.
Following the deadly encounter, homicide detectives with the Memphis Police Department launched a thorough
investigation into the circumstances surrounding Bailey's death. Their efforts over the subsequent months led them to identify Demetris Johnson as the primary suspect in the case. As a result of the evidence gathered, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
On April 7, 2018, nearly five months after the shooting, Demetris Johnson was taken into custody by law enforcement. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Rodtreze Bailey. Following his arrest, Johnson's bond was set at $250,000. The case brought attention to the issue of gun violence within the community.
