In the early morning hours of March 12, 2016, in the Orange Mound neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee, the life of sixteen-year-old D'Anthony Obee was tragically cut short. An African American male and a sophomore at East High School, D'Anthony was on Semmes Street at approximately 2 a.m. when two unidentified individuals appeared and began to chase him. The pursuit ended in gunfire, and D'Anthony was shot.
He succumbed to his injuries two hours later.
The sudden and violent death of D'Anthony left his family, including his mother Tonesha Brown, grandmother Debbie Amos, and aunt Antonette Johnson, in a state of profound grief and devastation. The community shared in their sorrow and expressed frustration over the persistent violence plaguing the city. At the time of D'Anthony's death, Memphis was experiencing a significant increase in homicides compared to the previous year.
Despite the emotional pleas from his family and the outcry from the community, the investigation into D'Anthony Obee's murder did not immediately lead to any arrests or the identification of any suspects.
