In the summer of 2023, the life of Barry Owens Porterfield, a 31-year-old Black/African American man from Memphis, Tennessee, was tragically cut short. On the evening of July 6th, gunfire erupted in the 2500 block of Smith Ridge Cove in the Frayser neighborhood. When the chaos subsided, Porterfield lay dead at the scene, a victim of the shooting. Another individual was also struck by the gunfire and was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.
According to his father, Larry Porterfield, the violent encounter may have been a case of mistaken identity. He believes his son was not the intended target but rather an innocent bystander who tragically walked into a deadly situation. The elder Porterfield recounted the heart-wrenching detail that one of the assailants approached his son as he was bleeding on the ground and shot him again at close range. The Memphis Police Department is reportedly searching for six gunmen in connection with the fatal shooting.
In the wake of his untimely death, Barry Owens Porterfield was remembered by his family, including his daughter, Brooklyn Underwood, his parents, Larry Porterfield and Alma Owens, and numerous siblings. A visitation and funeral service were held to honor his memory. To date, there have been no publicly announced arrests or identification of suspects in the ongoing homicide investigation. The case remains unsolved, leaving a family to grapple with their loss and the community to await answers.
