In the heart of Memphis, Tennessee, a dispute over a small sum of money tragically escalated, leading to the death of 42-year-old Myrico Deshun Carr on January 2, 2024. The Black / African American man was fatally shot in an incident that unfolded in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The chain of events reportedly began when Cornelius Walker, also 42, went to a residence on Staten Avenue to collect a $50 debt from Carr.
According to witness accounts provided to the Memphis Police Department, an argument ensued between the two men. Witnesses stated that Walker produced a handgun and pointed it at Carr. A struggle for the weapon followed, during which Carr was shot. By the time first responders arrived at the scene shortly after noon, Myrico Carr had already succumbed to his injuries.
In a surprising turn, Cornelius Walker, also known as 'CC', later turned himself in to the police. He provided investigators with his account of the incident, claiming that he had gone to the residence to ask Carr if he could pay at least $20 of the money he owed. Walker alleged that Carr became angry, and as he was getting up to leave, Carr noticed the gun at his side and tried to take it from him. Walker maintained that the gun discharged accidentally during the ensuing struggle.
Following the investigation, Cornelius Walker was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He was held in the Shelby County Jail. However, the legal proceedings took another unexpected turn. On March 1, 2024, the second-degree murder charge against Walker was dismissed due to a 'lack of prosecution,' according to court records. Later, on June 28, 2024, a petition to revoke a suspended sentence for Walker in a previous, unrelated case was granted.
