In a quiet home in the Parkway Village area of Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 37-year-old Javodrick J. Gordon came to a violent and unexpected end. On the evening of Wednesday, April 24, 2024, Gordon was fatally shot while he slept in his own bed. The grim discovery was made by a concerned family member after he failed to appear for work. He had sustained gunshot wounds to his head and chest, and there were no signs of a struggle or forced entry into his residence on Cloister Avenue.
The investigation into Gordon's death quickly gained momentum when his family reported that his 2017 Infiniti was missing from the home. Investigators were able to track the vehicle using its GPS system, which led them to the Capleville area on East Shelby Drive. When police attempted to stop the car, the driver fled, initiating a pursuit that ended when the suspect abandoned the vehicle and ran into a nearby home. Officers were able to gain entry to the house and apprehended the suspect.
The individual arrested was 17-year-old Montrell Kinds. Following his arrest, Kinds was charged with first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, and evading arrest. During questioning, Kinds allegedly admitted to being inside Gordon's house and taking his car. He claimed that a struggle had occurred between him and Gordon over a gun found under a pillow, which resulted in the fatal shots. However, investigators at the crime scene found no evidence to support the claim of a struggle.
Due to the severity of the charges, the Shelby County District Attorney's Office announced that Montrell Kinds would be tried as an adult. A grand jury later indicted him on charges of first-degree murder, first-degree murder in perpetration of aggravated robbery, and especially aggravated robbery. He was booked into the Shelby County Jail on a three-million-dollar bond.
