On the evening of June 6, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the night in the Westwood neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee, leaving two young men dead. One of the victims was 24-year-old Melvin Tabor. He and his friend, 21-year-old Ja'lon O Brooks, were walking to a neighborhood store in the vicinity of Shelby Drive and Southaven Road when they were suddenly ambushed.
The attack was swift and brutal.
Tabor was found lying dead in the street by his family who rushed to the scene after hearing the gunshots that sounded like a Fourth of July celebration. Brooks, in a desperate attempt to survive, managed to run to a nearby Valero gas station seeking help. Tragically, his efforts were in vain as he collapsed and died in the parking lot.
The Memphis Police Department launched an investigation into the double homicide. However, the motive for the shooting remains unclear, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects. As of late 2024, no arrests have been made in connection with the murders of Melvin Tabor and Ja'lon O Brooks. The case remains an open and active investigation, leaving a grieving community and two families searching for answers and justice.
