In the winter of 2024, the city of Memphis was shaken by the violent deaths of two women. On the afternoon of December 16th, police responded to a call in the 4700 block of Manson Road in Southwest Memphis. Inside a gray Kia, they discovered the bodies of 54-year-old Sharon Wilson and her friend, 53-year-old Ellen Buford Granberry. Both women had been shot to death. The discovery sent ripples of grief through their community, leaving friends and family to mourn their sudden and tragic loss.
Wilson was a beloved mother and grandmother, remembered for her beautiful smile and compassionate nature.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly intertwined with a separate, ongoing operation by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office targeting a vehicle theft ring. On the very same day the women were found, investigators served a search warrant at a residence in the 5900 block of Grosvenor Avenue as part of a different homicide investigation. During this raid, authorities uncovered stolen vehicles, drugs, and a cache of weapons. It was this discovery that provided the crucial link to the murders on Manson Road. Ballistic testing connected firearms found at the scene of the raid to the slayings of Wilson and Granberry.
This breakthrough led to the arrests of 21-year-old Desmond Emery and 22-year-old Jonathan Rush. Both men, already implicated in the vehicle theft operation, were subsequently charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of the two women. Rush also faced an additional charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The arrests brought a swift, albeit somber, development to the case, revealing a connection between a dangerous criminal enterprise and the senseless killing of two innocent women. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events that led to that fatal December afternoon.
