On a summer day in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 18-year-old Kentavion Dancy was tragically cut short. The Black / African American male was one of two victims in a fatal shooting that occurred on June 11, 2023. The incident took place in the 6000 block of Valleydale Drive in the Southeast part of the city, where both Dancy and 15-year-old Denisha Pittman were found with multiple gunshot wounds.
Both teenagers succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
The Memphis Police Department launched a double homicide investigation. Eyewitnesses reported seeing four suspects, clad in red hoodies and ski masks, fleeing the area in a red Lexus. For nearly a year, the case remained a focus for law enforcement as they worked to identify those responsible for the deaths of the two teens. The investigation bore a significant development on April 11, 2024, when authorities announced the arrest of 17-year-old Alvin Davis in connection with the murders.
Following his arrest, Alvin Davis was charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Kentavion Dancy and Denisha Pittman. In November 2024, a Shelby County Grand Jury indicted Davis on these charges. While one suspect is in custody, the investigation continues as three other individuals believed to be involved in the shooting remain at large. The search for these outstanding suspects is ongoing as the community hopes for further justice for the two young lives lost to gun violence.
