In the late hours of a Saturday evening in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 61-year-old Ernest Thomas was brought to a violent and abrupt end. On May 6, 2023, at a Marathon gas station located at 3465 Lamar Avenue, what began as a meeting between two individuals escalated into a fatal shooting. Thomas, a Black male, was seated in his vehicle when the encounter turned deadly.

Thomas had arranged to meet with an unidentified man who arrived at the location in a light-colored Nissan. The suspect was seen wearing a black shirt and khaki or gray pants. Shortly after their meeting began, for reasons that remain unclear to the public, the unidentified man brandished a rifle and fired at Thomas while he was still inside his car. The gunman then quickly fled the scene in the same Nissan, leaving a shocking scene behind for authorities to discover.
Memphis Police Department officers responded to the call shortly after 10 p.m. and found Thomas at the scene. He was pronounced dead from the gunshot wounds he sustained. In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators released the surveillance footage to the public in the hopes that someone would recognize the man responsible for Ernest Thomas's death.
