In the spring of 2018, the community of Bolivar, Tennessee, was shaken by the tragic death of 19-year-old Michael Ruiz. A senior at Bolivar Central High School with his whole life ahead of him, he was known as a great student who was set to graduate in May. Born in Rioverde, San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Ruiz had spent most of his life in Hardeman County. He was a beloved son, brother, and a dedicated employee at his aunt's restaurant, El Ranchito. Described as a protector and provider for his family, he was passionate about them and was always there for whatever they needed. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, playing basketball, and being outdoors.
On the night of March 20, 2018, while working at El Ranchito, two armed individuals entered the back of the restaurant in an attempted robbery. The young man was in the back washing dishes when he was tragically shot. Despite being rushed to Bolivar General Hospital, he did not survive his injuries. The violent end to a promising young life sent ripples of grief and shock through the close-knit town.
The investigation into the death of Michael Ruiz led to the arrest of three individuals. Among them was a fellow employee and classmate, 19-year-old John Gray, along with two other juveniles who also attended Bolivar Central High School. The suspects faced charges of first-degree murder, especially aggravated armed robbery, and possession of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony.
In January 2020, a Hardeman County jury found Lavonta Lamar Douglas, who was 19 at the time of the offense, guilty of first-degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery in connection with Ruiz's death. Surveillance footage reportedly showed that Ruiz appeared to be complying with the demands of the assailants when he was shot. The conviction brought a measure of justice for a life cut short, a life that was cherished by his family and the community he called home.
