On May 3, 2018, 22-year-old Demarco Churchwell, a male of African American ethnicity from Nashville, Tennessee, was fatally shot inside Opry Mills Mall. The incident began as an active shooter situation, causing panic among shoppers. Churchwell was shot by 22-year-old Justin Golson, also from Nashville, during a physical altercation that stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the two.
