On March 22, 2023, authorities in Joplin, Missouri, initiated a death investigation after responding to a request for a well-being check at a residence located at 1403 East Broadway Street. Upon arrival at the scene around 9:17 a.m., officers from the Joplin Police Department attempted to contact the occupants. Receiving no response, they forced entry into the home, where they discovered the bodies of two adults.
The victims were identified as 24-year-old Savannah Faith Bell and 44-year-old Jason Shofler.
Following the discovery, the bodies were transported for autopsies to determine the official cause of death. Preliminary results released by investigators confirmed that the White female victim and the male victim had both sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Police recovered a firearm at the scene, though they did not immediately disclose the specific circumstances leading to the shooting or the weapon’s proximity to the deceased individuals. The Joplin Police Department stated early in the inquiry that they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the general public.
Savannah Bell, born in Fayetteville, Arkansas, had been a resident of Joplin since her family moved there during her youth. She was a 2017 graduate of Joplin High School and had subsequently attended a technical institute in Texas to obtain certification in autobody work. As of the last available public updates regarding the case, law enforcement officials had not announced any arrests or named any specific suspects in connection with the deaths. The investigation remained active as detectives continued to seek information from the community regarding the events that transpired inside the Broadway Street residence.
