On August 6, 2023, at approximately 4 a.m., 28-year-old Jamal Easterling of Bennettsville, South Carolina, was fatally shot in the Society Hill area of Darlington County. Deputies responded to the incident on Society Hill Road, where Easterling was pronounced dead at the scene. Another individual sustained a gunshot wound to the leg during the incident.
