On June 2, 2014, authorities in Newton County, Missouri, were called to a residence in the Bykota Mobile Home Park, located east of Joplin. Inside the home, emergency responders discovered 3-year-old Miranda Joann Doerr suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The young girl was transported to Freeman Hospital in Joplin, where she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.
At the time of the incident, Miranda had been playing in a bedroom with her 6-year-old brother.
A loaded handgun was reportedly accessible in the room where the children were located. Miranda's mother, Jennifer Doerr, was home during the shooting but was situated in a different part of the residence when the gun was discharged. Following the event, the 6-year-old brother was taken into state protective custody as investigators worked to determine exactly what had transpired within the bedroom.
Newton County Coroner Mark Bridges officially ruled the death an accident. While the autopsy confirmed that Miranda did not shoot herself, the coroner noted that he could not definitively state who pulled the trigger, though the circumstances strongly pointed to the firearm being discharged by the sibling during their play. Sheriff Ken Copeland confirmed that a loaded weapon had been left in the room. Unlike similar cases in the region during that period where adults faced legal repercussions, public records and reports from the time do not indicate that arrests were made or charges filed against the parents in connection with this specific tragedy.
